BrisbaneBrisbane is the third largest city in Australia and was founded as a penal colony (one of the toughest criminal in Australia) in 1823. In 1859. Brisbane became the capital of the state. Its growth is mainly due to the port area and thanks to mining which had its heyday in the years 60-70. This rapid growth relatively late in Brisbane’s history, provides a mix of decentralized urban environment.

You can find nineteenth-century architecture in the areas of Spring Hill, and truly modern and cosmopolitan touches begin to highlight the whole area. Brisbane has two world-renowned botanical gardens: City Botanic Gardens, Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. The first was built in 1855 right in the Brisbane River in the center of town and is a true oasis in the urban landscape of the city. It is well known for its water birds and mangroves.

Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens are just west of downtown near the Mt Coot-tha Forest Park and was founded in 1976. Inside the park you can spend a fun day enjoying the Brisbane Planetarium, which is the largest in Australia.

Not far from this area you can find a large number of buildings from the late nineteenth century as part of Brisbane’s early history. Queensland’s Parliament House was built in 1865 with the French model of the Renaissance. It is an impressive structure inside and out. It is still used as the seat of government.
